Dr. Claudia Black (Claudia Black Inc.) explains the pressing need to treat the families of addicts, as well as the addicts themselves, to prevent the intergenerational transfer of addiction. Dr. Black explores how traumas experienced in early childhood put the children of addicts at a much greater risk of becoming addicts themselves and of choosing partners who are abusive. She illustrates how addiction and abuse becomes a family legacy, with each generation inheriting the subsequent generation’s poor parenting skills, diminished expectations, and low self-esteem. She believes that the time has come to address addiction as a family issue.
