This interim memo summarizes ongoing research into conceptual challenges in the public’s understanding of addiction and what causes it. The report charts a course through the dominant patterns of reasoning employed by the public, identifies the major challenges for communicators, and recommends how communications may be redirected to improve public understanding and increase support for evidence-based programs and policies to address addiction.
