A Strategy Check-up: What Happened to US Drug Strategy?

Thomas McLellan

Addiction

October 2013

Dr. Thomas McLellan (Treatment Research Institute) makes a compelling case for implementing science-based drug policies in North American communities. Dr. McLellan proposes reworking public policy to provide care for the estimated 60 million Americans who are not addicts, yet engage in €œmedically harmful use€ of illegal drugs and alcohol. He proposes three pillars of a new brain-science-based drug policy: build national system of €œprevention prepared communities;€ screen and intervene with emerging substance abuse issues; and integrate evidence-based addictions treatments into mainstream healthcare using the chronic care model.
