Addiction, Service Delivery
October 2013
Marvin Seppala, MD explores the high prevalence of prescription opioid addiction and overdose-related deaths among healthcare workers, especially anesthesiologists. Dr. Seppala points out that the factors that put physicians and the general population at increased risk of addiction are the same. He concludes that the long-term, addiction treatment and monitoring that physicians receive explain their remarkably high recovery rates compared with the general population. He believes success treating healthcare worker addiction should inform better treatment programs for the general population.
